Less an engine than a cyst made of metal, Ford's notorious 3.8-liter V6 was plunked into hundreds of thousands of Tauruses, Sables, T-birds, Cougars, Continentals and Windstars. Many of them blew their head gaskets, a $2K+ repair. And the repaired engines were just as much at risk for blowing up again.

Ford was aware of the head gasket problem and at first did nothing. Then the company covered later models with a longer warranty, but this halfway measure left early adopters out in the cold. It was an exceedingly effective way to drive Ford's customers to the competition.
