| Less an engine than a cyst made of metal, Ford's notorious 3.8-liter V6 was plunked into hundreds of thousands of Tauruses, Sables, T-birds, Cougars, Continentals and Windstars. Many of them blew their head gaskets, a $2K+ repair. And the repaired engines were just as much at risk for blowing up again. |
| Ford was aware of the head gasket problem and at first did nothing. Then the company covered later models with a longer warranty, but this halfway measure left early adopters out in the cold. It was an exceedingly effective way to drive Ford's customers to the competition. |
