The early Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable were well-rounded cars, with plenty of room, comfort and over-the-road competence. Despite this - and despite all the awards they received and the sheer number of them that were sold - they are bad choices as beaters. Why? Because they are shockingly unreliable.
Some cars with reliability issues have picky little problems that nickel and dime you to death. Others have the looming threat of catastrophic component failure. The Taurus and Sable have both, and this $100 Taurus GL wagon really told the story.
